Search Engine Optimisation, or SEO for short, is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site or a web page from search engines via “natural” or un-paid (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results as opposed to search engine marketing (SEM) which deals with paid inclusion.
The theory is that the earlier (or higher) a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search and industry-specific vertical search engines. This gives a web site web presence.
Search engine optimisation is quite an art form and a qualified seo technician will be able to boost your search engine rankings within months. The only downside is that a good seo technician is very expensive to hire. Anyone claiming to be able to boost your websites position within weeks for a small sum, is either lieing or undertaking practices banned by most search engines. The fee of a competent SEO technicean will often run into thousands of pounds. If your interested, here are a couple I would suggest you use :
To cut a very long story short, search engine rankings are based on links to your site with each link counting as a vote for your site. However the search engines are clever these days and simply swapping links with other websites is no longer good enough. To get a website to the top of the pile it needs to draw more links than your competitors and it needs to draw them by natural methods. The best way to do this is to create a quality website with great content that people talk about and will link to without you asking them to.
There are 2 disciplines within SEO, known as white hat seo and black hat seo.
- Black Hat search engine optimisation involves unethical techniques that are used to get higher search rankings. Black hat SEO techniques usually break search engine rules and regulations and generally create poor user experience. Black hat seo is usually detected by search engines such as google and bing within months and sometimes weeks. The result is often a penalty (your website is dropped down the rankings by several pages), or worse still a ban (your site is completely removed from the search engine). By the time you realise what has happened the seo technician who put you at the top of google by illegal means has hot footed it with your money and you never hear nor see of them again. My advice is “Do not believe amazing promises from website companies who contact you by email and tell you how they will put your site at the top of all the search engines. These people are often nothing but crooks. A good seo technicean never needs to advertise or tout for business via email. You usually have to go in search of them, and they are pricey because their results mean they are never without work
- White hat SEO techniques will take you to the top of the search engines over a long period of time. They focus largely on creating a high class website full of kick ass content. Once the word gets out about great sites the effect can often be viral with other websites falling over themselves to link to you. The end result is that your website goes to the top of the pile based on legitimate techniques. White Hat SEO’s place you at the top, but as mentioned earlier their fees can be high.
So what SEO Can Whitby Web Design Do For You ??
Well I’m not into fooling my customers to make them think I will get them to the top of Google for every search phrase in the book. However it is highly likely that for a small business site with little competition we will get you to the top of Google for your business name within a few months (often weeks).
To be found under more diverse keywords in the search engines requires a bit more effort on your behalf. Your site needs to be of interest to others and draw links to separate pages where you target different keywords. The addition of a blog (Where you write frequently about your business), a review section (Where you seek site users to review your product) or a forum (where you encourage members to discuss your business) are all legitimate ways that you can create a dynamic and interesting website, drawing more viewers and links to your site and thus aiding you to target other keywords and search phrases.
Other things you may wish to consider include : Link Baiting (You add something to your site specifically designed to create interest, usually this involves : Humour, controversy, uncovering a major story first, a joke, disagreeing with an authority, conflict, create a resource, write something authoritative, become an expert in your field and write about it)
Obviously this all takes time, I suppose you have to ask yourself how much time you have to put into your website and how much you want to get out of it in return. If you wish to discuss SEO with us please get in touch via the details on the contacts page.
SEO is one of the most important thing in a website because even you have lot of content but you can’t show it to people it is useless.
search engine marketing is also good but you need some capital to shed on your adwords account.-”,
Its refreshing to see someone being honest about search engine optimisation. Im fed up of endless emails from companies promising to get you to the top of google. At first I believed them and they were only to willing to continue taking my money. Thanks for your honesty guys, its appreciated.
I once paid a company £200 to get me number 1 spot for, Whitby Accomodation. They eventually got my website banned from the search engines for spamming and buying links. Never again. As Whitby web design say, allow your links to grow naturally and dont take risks with your online presence.
